Bodhgaya:
Buddha attained enlightenment near the holy city of Gaya. The tree that had sheltered him came to be known as the Bhodi Tree and the place Bodhgaya. Today Bodhgaya, an important place of pilgrimage, has a number of monasteries. Places of great interest are The Bodhi Tree, Mahabodhi Temple, and monasteries, Magadh University.

Kapilavastu
(Pipahawa) -: It was at Kapilavastu amidst opulent surroundings that the young Prince Siddhartha (later known as Buddha) grew up. It was here that he, on seeing sorrow and pain, sickness and death, decided to renounce all worldly riches and pleasures to seek truth and the path to salvation. The ruins of the old city from where Buddhism started has several stupas. From the main stupa have been recovered stone caskets containing relics believed to be that of the Buddha.
